Anonymous asked: Some questions for Armine: How do you keep Ableton synced with the rest? Is there something like a clicktrack running for the drum? For launching clips live do you use a controller (like the launchpad)? And how do you start making the ambient stuff? Do you just mess around with some vst's? (Which vst's?) Thanks :)

We don’t sync Ableton with the band at all. The Samples are made part specific and thus allowed to loop until the part is over. The entire process is controlled manually.

As for making samples, VST use comes only at the very end of my process. I always start with a hijacked sample from a record or .WAV

Anonymous asked: For Armine: Are any of your students fans of your music? I imagine it'd be way cool to play a local show and have a bunch of your students supporting you.

For the most part I(Armine) talk very little about Rosetta to my students. There are however a few who know, and knew about Rosetta before having me as a teacher. That being said, Rosetta has played local shows where my students show up just out of curiosoty.

Anonymous asked: I would love to know what main effects you use on your vocals? If any.

Only a small amount of delay is used on the vocals in a live setting. Recording is an entirely different process in terms of vocals.

Anonymous asked: I'm sure you guys don't want to be a dispensary for generic advice, but I'll shoot anyway. I play bass and, might I add, poorly. Any tips/advice on getting better?

Practice for 10,000 hours. Not joking. In Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell says that you need 10,000 hours of practice to get good at anything. Most of us in Rosetta just hit that mark fairly recently. For the instrument to even begin to be rewarding, you actually have to play every single day.

Anonymous asked: Hey guys, I found this trailer on YouTube that is for a documentary about Rosetta. But apart from that I can't find anymore information about this documentary. Could you guys give more details about the film? Thanks a lot.

Sure. The documentary has been in process since last year, and is being made by Justin Jackson. It’s an independent project of his, not commissioned by the band or any label, so the form that it takes will be up to him. We’re hoping that it will be finished in time for Rosetta’s tenth anniversary in June of 2013. If all works out, we’ll have an event of some sort so that people can see it. No word on a DVD release at this point.

Anonymous asked: Hi there ! I was just wondering why don't you talk about your life ? Nowhere ? I don't ever know how old you guys are, or know anything about you outside Rosetta ! Maybe I'm a bit too concern about the people who plays the music I listen too but I don't know, I love to know who spend days with me ! So my only interrogation is : How are you ? Really.

I think if you look at the questions we’ve answered on Tumblr and our Facebook page, you’ll find that we’re actually pretty forthcoming about our personal lives. The reality though is that our lives aren’t any more interesting than the average North American’s. We work, we don’t do drugs, nobody’s dating a porn star, and we live in a city that’s great but which nobody cares about. I suppose you could follow @jamesmafyew or @lafingputz on Twitter if you want to see how mundane it all really is.

Besides, isn’t it awful when “artists” blow up your Twitter/FB feed with lame pictures of their new plasma TVs or birthday cakes or happy hour drinks? Yikes.

Anonymous asked: Did you already you play TMA-3 live, or do you consider to do so ? I mean, this song is so powerful and epic masterpiece I dream to hear it live oneday, but maybe it's harder to play onstage than your other songs ?...

We have been playing TMA-3 live since last September, at nearly every show.

Anonymous asked: The title "A Determinism of Morality" seems to be a reference to free will and certain kinds of ethical dilemmas stemming from how we interpret free will (or a lack thereof). I, myself, have my own thoughts on free will but I'm curious to the album titles meaning. Doesn't have to be too specific or detailed but I know different perspectives include scientific (quantum physics), philosophical or spiritual views.

It really grows out of a question about whether our past controls our ability to be moral persons. Do our experiences and/or genes determine our character, or can we create it ourselves? Can we choose right over wrong or are we hardwired for selfishness and betrayal?
